when your lighting system is wired with #12 thhn to the 4x4 jbox.

Does the fixture whip which is installed by the installer to the fixture have to be a #12 prewired fixture whip?? Is the whip classified as part of the fixture or part of the installation since it is wired to the fixture by the installer (electrician)??

If the fixture whip comes with the fixture is the whip then part of the fixture and allowed to be a #14 or smaller whip??

I know this sounds hypothetical but I am doing a fixture replacement and rewire from the switch's I am making my own whips out of #12 AC cable..mainly because we own the cable already but I am curious as to what you guys think and what the code book says in regards to this..

okay are the whips from the Jbox part of the branch circuit or part of the fixture??

art 402 talks about wires used internally in the fixture..

It called a fixture whip because it's part of the fixture.... just like a cord on a lamp. Neither is a "branch circuit conductor".

I apologize because I have edited both of the above posts while you guys were posting..sorry will try and refrain from adding to the posts after initial posting..

What say we start over so we all know the new start point?

I think he's asking whether a fixture whip he field-fabricates needs to be made with 12, or can he use the rules of Art. 402.

I thought he was asking if he makes the whip from the jbox to the fixture, not using the one that came with the fixture, does it still fall under fixture wiring?

I do not believe I can use the art 402 because If I make them then I think it has to be classified as part of the branch circuit..

so If I make the whip from the Jbox to the fixture is it part of the branch circuit or part of the fixture?? I have found nothing stating how to classify it..

"Field-manufactured wiring assembly".

yep that is what I classify it..just was wondering if anyone else ever contemplated it..

Making fixture whips? I'd rather order them from the supply house, but if I'm too far away to go get one, or just need one or two, I'll make on with parts from the truck.

I did contemplate that for this job but they had the AC cable and wanted me to use it so I said no problem it is t&M job..

edited to add..this lighting job is because a couple of the students are having minor siezures due to the strobing 8ft T-12's..So I have designed a system that should ease their eye stress..2x4 t-8 troffers with parabolic lenses..
