I have a customer asking me to install a fixture in a closet under the stairs. It's not a "clothes" closet, there is no clothes-hanging rod. I'm thinking 410.8 does not apply. What do you think?
Thanks.

Here's the new definition from the 2008 NEC:

Clothes Closet. A non-habitable room or space intended primarily for storage of garments and apparel.

Given that information I would agree with you but as Bryan said someone else (AHJ) might have a different opinion.

Why not put in a closet light and not worry about what it may be or how the AHJ will look at the use?

Much easier than worrying about it and can be done rather inexpensively too.

Are you referring to a battery powered light?

I don't see where 410.8 would apply if it is clearly not a clothes closet.

Unless clearly defined as other then a cloths closet your inspector may say it is one.

It's clearly not a clothes closet, now.

I know you can't inspect to what might happen.

I hope that's true because my bedroom could become a closet someday also...

Just did a trat of houses. Told them at rough that they couldn't have the light they were installing in the closet under the stairs. Oh it's just storage, bla bla bla. Went back at final and they had to tear out 30 shelves and poles.

Not my first rodeo.
