I'm replacing existing lighting in a mechanical space. In the center section, the overhead is very conjested. In some places you can't get to the ceiling. Some of the existing lighting in this area, is mounted on a duct. I've looked in the code at article 300 and 410, and I don't see this being prohibited. I'm still not sure though and would like something in black and white to help me decide how to do this. Any help you can give will be apperciated.
Thanks

There is nothing in the NEC that addresses attaching a box or luminaire to a duct system. This is not the best of design but I don't think it is a violation to attach a luminaire to a duct. I would make sure that the duct is strong enought to support the additional weight of the luminaire.

I just browsed all through the IBC and the IMC and much to my surprise I could not find specific language that would prohibit such a wiring method. I think it's an inherently defective plan, but would lack clear language to enforce its removal if I were the AHJ. :)

This guy doesn't seem to have a problem with it.

 Well there you have it it's already been done. LOL. I would say a bad plan are you going to then egc the ductwork if metal box? I would hate to touch an energised register some day if something went wrong. Hmm then again maybe that would keep my teenagers from monkeying and turning off all the ducts in the house:)

Wouldn't the metal box mounted to the metal duct accomplish the same thing?

scott, i was searching for that pic... thanks

Thanks guys. I'm not real crazy about using the duct work to hang lights off, but the other options are going to be a real pain in the rear. The fixtures I'm replacing have been there since the early 60,s. I guess those old guys knew a thing or two also. The T-5 fixtures a a lot smaller so I'm not to worried about the weight. Thanks again.

I would at least suggest a piece of strut or other suitable bar, with angle brackets on the end, and sheet-metal screws into the sides of the duct rather than the bottom surface. Pull-out of screws would be a concern otherwise.
