I've been doing residential too long. Help me out please. I seem to remember that there was (is) a llimitation on voltage for lighting (luminaires) installed lower than 8' from grade/floor but I can't seem to find it. The project is a flagpole light mounted at the base of the pole and there is a 277volt circuit real handy. OK? NOTOK?

There are some requirements in 210.6 and 225.7 that you may be thinking of.

Hoverer none of them are likely to limit you.

You could supply this at 480 if you wanted.

Once you get to 277 IMO you might as well move to 480, either way it's 277 to ground.

Thanks all. I know there was something in the NEC years ago (or I'm getting too **** old and CRS). I'll probably look in some of my old NECs as my sleeping pill tonight.

OK I found it. There was an 8' minimum vertical requirement for 277volt fixtures up through the 1984 NEC. It was changed in the 1987 NEC which removed the requirement. Now I know I'm getting old, but at least I found it. We went through this in code classes back when I was just a pup but for the last 28 years I've been doing mostly residential work so when we do classified locations, commercial/industrial etc I have to bone up a bit from time to time.

Great attitude to ask first. And we can all learn.
By the way I've done a few flag pole lights and putting the luminare on the pole doesn't work all that great. It needs to be away from the pole a bit, how far depends on the wattage of the lamp. I found a document once on flagpole lighting, I thought it was here, http://www.greenleelighting.com/#Anchor-floodlights
but I don't see it now.
Metal Halide is a great choice.

This is an existing installation all concrete slab and the light is mounted on the ground about 5' from the pole. We are retrofitting w/ a new fixture and puling in a new circuit. Thanks for all the help.

The restaurent I often go to (Perkins) has a HUGE flag and pole. After the ground mounted lights kept getting torn up they mounted three lights on the pole. Worked well. Just another way to do it.
