Flex Metal and EMT

I'm helping my son plan a hot tub installation in a city where a homeowner can do his own electical.

Is it code to snake metal flex conduit vertically through a wall from the GFCI breaker, then use a combination fitting to connect to EMT where it goes out to run under the deck? We plan to use the metal conduit and EMT for the ground if that is code.

He will be running #6 Cu from the 50 Amp GFCI unit.

It is an old house and there is a 100 Amp sub-panel connected to the service with a 6" long steel nipple, but no ground wire. The grounds in the subpanel are connected to the neutral bar. Does the fact that the sub-panel is immediately adjacent to the service allow connecting the grounds to the neutral bar in the sub-panel? If he adds a grounding bar, is it adequate to screw it to the metal panel, or must a grounding conductor be run to the service neutral?

The neutral wire from main to sub has had about 1/3 of the strands clipped next to the neutral bar hole because the full wire wouldn't fit into the hole in the sub-panel neutral bar. Is it ok for that short distance, or must it be fixed by doing something about the neutral bar?

Bob,

It sounds like this house has a number of electrical problems which are beyond the ability of a homeowner doing his own electrical work. I would get a licensed electrician to take a look before proceeding any further.

You'll probably have a post shortly from one of the moderators telling you that Mike Holt has requested that we not assist do-it-yourselfers.

That said, I agree with Trevor. You have identified a number of problems which need professional help. Get the grounding and bonding fixed first, or this will be an accident waiting to happen.
