Ok guys I have one for you. I have recently had a inspector from the state come to our plant and gig'd me for some violations on flexible cable. I have a hard pipe in my shop that goes to a 6X6 box and changes to a "heavy usage" cable to plug in my welders, plasma cutter and such, 400.10 (6), (8) allows cable for such equipment to be used. I guess he had a problem with the box from which it changed from hard pipe to cable, just joints made in the box no disconnect or anything. Another thing was that I have a disconnect by my workbench to plug in various items for testing and it has two pigtails hanging out which is strain relief, short cable with 480V. twist lock receptacle and he's telling that's not code. Couple of things here I think he picking the corn out the poopchute first the box that has the changeover to cable is a UL list box as well as the strain relief on the cable coming out as the same with the cord cap on the end and the other with the pigtails. Can't find anything in Wiring Methods or Flexible cable saying I'm in the wrong. Any givers. Thanks ahead for your input.:(:weeping::slaphead:

Details and pictures would help (and punctuation and paragraphs.)

The "UL list" on the box means nothing in this context, nor a proper strain relief.

When you say "cable" did you really mean "cord?" They are not the same thing. Cable would probably be a violation. Cord might or might not be, depending on the details.

What is the exact receptacle (or is it actually a connector, which is not exactly the same thing) that you have on your 480V "cable?" Again, I'm assuming this is actually a cord, and not a cable.

400.7 Uses Permitted.
(B) Attachment Plugs. Where used as permitted in 400.7(A)(3), (A)(6), and (A)(8), each flexible cord shall be equipped with an attachment plug and shall be energized from a receptacle outlet.

Did you provide a rec.

My bad 400.4 list this as a heavy use cord not cable. And there is a difference between a cord and cable I know. I'm using 2017 code we adopted beginning at the first of the year and 400.10(B) states:

(B) Attachment Plug. Where used as permitted in 400.10(A) (3), (A) (6), and (A) (8), each flexible cord shall be equipped with an attachment plug and shall be energized from a receptacle outlet or cord connector body.

New to 2017 is (or cord connector body.) What is the definition of cord connector body? It's not in definitions but also new to definitions is (cord connector) but really doesn't apply.
As far as the box with the changeover from hard pipe to cord with just joints made in it I have changed to a disconnect with a single pigtail and cord cap on the end. Every time I put a receptacle the cord gets yanked out damaging or bending blades that's the reason I do this with the pigtail and cap. I just need to know if I'm missing something in code not permitting the pig tail and cap.

I still don't know what specific articles of the code he said you violated.
Have him give you a specific code article you violated so the back and forth process can begin to resolve the issue.

First, you are getting gigged for an existing installation right after a changeover to the new Code?

I don't have a 2017, but I don't see how they are referring to anything by "cord connector body" as other than to a female cord cap. That's what I was referring to when I asked if it was a receptacle or a connector you were actually using. I also asked exactly which configuration you were using.

Changing from a receptacle to a cord cap is how you are dealing with an idiot who yanks cords out?

There are still way too many details missing for me to picture what you have done here.

Is the "pigtail" itself also a cord subject to to the energizing origin requirement? How long is it?
