Howdy. I have always thought that floor boxes installed on the ground floor or lower had to be cast iron since it would be considered a wet location. Did I imagine this cast iron thing? I'm now thinking that the NEC doesn't get into material just that the box has to be suitable for a wet location. Would a galvanized box or a plastic box suffice if wet listed? What would be a good box to put into an existing basement floor that is to be saw cut?

Thanks for you time

Jim

The floor box must be listed for the location.

I have installed many PVC floor boxes that were rated for installation in a concrete slab on grade where the box was in contact with the earth.

I believe that it's the Carlon boxes, but it might be all of them that are really nice. You don't have to be to worried about getting them just right as you can just cut them flush with the floor later.

But once again Chris is right, the box just has to be listed for the location.

I really like the carlon boxes that you can trim down when you go to install the device. It makes it real easy when you don't know what the floor finish is going to be.
