I'm looking to install floor receptacles in an existing home with carpeted floors.

Any tips on cutting the carpet would be appreciated.

It seems that the carpet is going to want to unravel.

Would "sealing" the cut ends in some way be advisable ?

Help appreciated.

Sharp utility knife will work just fine on the carpet then use a oscillating tool or a sawzall for the subfloor.

I would use a solid brass cover that is designed as a floor cover.

Does anyone have experience with a particular model that is intended for rework application in carpeted floors?

Looked at several options, the ones I found state they are for wood flooring.

Thanks

Use a carpet knife, very carefully. They are a lot sharper than utility blades and if you slip they will slice you like Freddy Kruger meets Edward Scissorhands. You can get a cheap one for $5.

You may need longer screws than what comes with the floor receptacle if the padding and carpet are thick. Main thing is not drilling a joist in half.

Also, if you are driving screws through the carpet, it can sometimes grab the fibers and unravel quite a distance. A little wax on the drill bit might help, I have never tried it.

Just make sure you cut the carpet back far enough that the screws don't catch it. I have used single gang metal boxes with ears and adjusted the ears so that the top of the box is even with the carpet. That way you can pull the carpet back and attach the box to the sub floor using screws and the edge of the box will support the cover. Some brands of floor boxes come with the box and cover together.

Just use a standard double or single brass floor receptacle. Cut as stated above. I think those units that saw for wood just means that are not for concrete.

You're going to have a real bad day if you screw up that carpet.
You may want to consider having a carpet guy come in and pull the rug back, you put your boxes in, he modifies the carpet, etc.
You could also tell the owner you won't take liability for the carpet and they need to have a carpet guy come in and pull the rug back and put it back after your boxes are in.
