I just received word that Lee County Fl, where I worked untill Feb 1st, just laied off 9 more building inspectors. 2 were electrical. They had 15 electricial When I started in '06. Now down to 6. I don't look for any improvment untill after the Presidental Elections. Then It will take 6 months to start moving.

With which new president ?

Folks we built "Potemkin Villages" just about as long as we could. The housing slump is not what's wrong with the economy it's just another symptom. It's impossible to keep building homes for people that can afford them. If it worked like that they would be building homes all over Mexico.

The housing bubble was just another facade to mask the fact that the American Economy is in real trouble. The only solution to the problem since about 1968 has been more liquidity ( credit ) to allow consumers to dig an even deeper hole. Just a few short years ago there were not even recognized numbers to express the amount of money now in circulation, a trillion dollars just didn't exist. We haven't incresed value we just keep printing more money ( faster printing presses are not the answer).

Unless Americans start buying products that are actually made in America our economy is in the toilet. Don't expect any real quick fix to the economy no matter who's is elected president because there are none.

Just my opinion of the situation. The titanic is sinking and just because the band keeps playing it doesn't mean a thing. I have always thought that I would have started to build a raft. There has to be something on a ship that will float.

Well said! To add: Don't expect our economy to improve, if you are going to lay down an get kicked!!

Whats killing Florida is high insurance and taxes.Forclosures are at a peak.I do not see things changing anytime soon. They could get ever worse depending on who gets in office.Right now just happy i am working.

Rocks have almost no value untill you make them into something. We have stopped turning rocks into things. We only create real wealth when we manufacture!!

This reminds me of the picture of the mouse on the rock with his middle finger raised to the eagle that is about to eat him. The message is that this is somehow a brave mouse. I maintain that this is a stupid mouse. He could hide under the rock. He could build a raft.Giving up bravely is still giving up!

So Cavie was really not laid off, it is just media hype.
I guess I'm not making more in these "depressed times" than I ever have before? Housing starts were up in April. You all should be excited about that.

message of hope

message of hope

I'm sure that everyone has seen their share of bad times (if not, consider yourself lucky or keep checking over your shoulder). When I was a kid my whole crew got laid off one Christmas eve, boy that was some kinda timing. I didn't tell my family for two weeks so it didn't ruin their xmas, but it sure ruined mine.

Anyhow, if you are lucky enough to stay gainfully employed, or at least afloat, until things get better. I have found in my short life that its always best to view these downturns (recessions, depressions, whatever term you want to use) as opportunities. The opportunity might not present itself for a year or two, but believe this: there will be an opportunity on the horizon. If you position yourself to take advantage of this opportunity, then you can ride the good times for a few years until the next downturn. There are several old wives tales that turn out to be good advice, too:

-don't put all your eggs in one basket (if someone comes along and give you too much work, that someone could run you out of business too dang easily)

-put some nuts away for winter

bottom line: try to survive, but have your ducks in a row so you can go out there and kill em when times get good again.

Housing start up were not really up in April. The number of permits for housing were up. Most of the increases were for apartments and condos. If they wanted an accurate way to judge the residential construction industry they would quote a dollar value for the projects and not number of permits. I have a feeling that the total dollar value would be way down.

I really think cheap apartments are being built so those getting kicked out of their homes will have a place to live.

Actually, you're not right. Starts rose 8.2% (just over a million units!) and permits rose 4.9% (almost a million units!). This was the single biggest jump since Jan of '06. You are right, however, that most of those were for multi-unit occupancies, but work is work. Nonetheless, permit increases occurred for both single-family and multi-unit homes.

I think June permits and starts are at 9% and 11%, if I'm not mistaken. I just know that the turnaround started in April.

Marc, can you provide the substantiation to this?

This is a time where the rich get richer.Neighbors place was listed at $212,000 7 months ago,now at 160 for 2 months and no takers.Residential other than custom homes is over.Nobody can afford them.I been here since 73 and never seen it this bad before.
