[TD valign="top"]The Florida Legislature passed House Bill 1193 during the 2020 legislative session. Once signed by Governor DeSantis, continuing education requirements for Electrical, Alarm and Specialty Contractors will be reduced, effective July 1, 2020.

Renewals prior to the July 1, 2020 effective date will be based on current requirements. After July 1, 2020 the requirements shall be as follows:

Certified Electrical Contractors = 11 hours of Continuing Education
1 hour workers’ compensation
1 hour workplace safety
1 hour business practices
1 hour Florida Laws & Rules
7 hours of Technical to include - 1 hour Florida Building Code advanced module course and 2 hours false alarm prevention for all certified electrical contractors who perform alarm work

Registered Electrical Contractors = 11 hours of Continuing Education
1 hour workers’ compensation
1 hour workplace safety
1 hour business practices
1 hour Florida Laws & Rules
7 hours of Technical to include - 1 hour Florida Building Code advanced module course

Certified and Registered Alarm Contractors = 7 hours of Continuing Education
1 hour workers’ compensation
1 hour workplace safety
1 hour business practices
1 hour Florida Laws & Rules
2 hours false alarm prevention
1 hours of Technical to include - 1 hour Florida Building Code advanced module course

Certified and Registered Specialty Contractors = 7 hours of Continuing Education
1 hour workers’ compensation
1 hour workplace safety
1 hour business practices
1 hour Florida Laws & Rules
1 hours of Technical to include - 1 hour Florida Building Code advanced module course
2 hours general credit

Currently EC's are required to have 14 hours. Changing to 11.
Specialty and alarm contractors currently have to have 14 hours, changing to 7.
Appear to be dropping the false alarm prevention class for registered contractors. Not sure why. I believe they can do alarms so would need it.

Note: certified = statewide license. Registered = county (where tested) only license.


Here are the current requirements:
Florida Electrical Continuing Education Required: FL Unlimited, Specialty, Alarm 1, Alarm 2, and all registered electrical contractors must take 14 hours of Florida DBPR approved CE courses covering the following topics:
  • 7 hours Technical
  • 1 hour Workers' Compensation
  • 1 hour Workplace Safety
  • 1 hours Florida Laws and Rules
  • 1 hour Business Practices
  • 1 hour Florida Advance Building Code
  • 2 hours General (which can be an overage of any topic above or approved as general)
  • 2 hours False Alarm Prevention (if you perform alarm work)
