Can anyone on this site shed light on to why the DBPR is so disfunctional. I have called them repeatedly about the fact that I have been approved for the exam and they still refuse to notify Pearson Vue, so I can sign up and test. I have sent e-mails and called. DBPR even agrees I have been approved and there web-site shows so, however no one can seem to figure out why the test agency is not being notified. I have asked to speak to a supervisor and have been told there is no one to take to. I don't know what to do anymore. I guess I could write the Governors Office and sent a copy of all of the e-mails. Pearson VUE will not contact the state on my behalf......The State refuses to call them for me.......The DBPR operator just keeps telling me, that they have notified the proper department. I have asked to speak to this department directly and they refuse. I don't have a way of contacting this department or the board directly....I guess i could write letters to members of the State legislature and the Governors Office...........Anyone who maybe able to help me....I would be grateful.....

I ran into similar problems during the licensing process.
I contacted my state senators office and they got me in touch with the right people.
I don't know if I still have names and phone numbers, will check at home and PM to you if I do.

Thanks,

I have Electrical Licenses in 9 states and I have never come up against this kind of obstruction. DBPR has fought me every step of the way and I have not even taken the test yet. The worst part is they won't return phone calls and e-mails only about 1 in 3.

Thanks for any help you can give........

Florida is one quirky state. My brother in law had a lot of problems when he went into the sherifs department too. Its almost like the whole state is run by a hand full of people and they cant handle the work load.

i was trying to get my license reciprocated awhile back to work on a development in tallahassee. after a few conversations with the DBPR, i finally just gave up. I never got the same answer twice. But i've talked to people from FL who've complained about GA's licensing division; i've always found them to be extremely easy to deal with. From what i've been told, if you applied in FL today, it'll be a year before you get your license.

That is true it takes about a year if all goes well. Almost all electrical licenseing business has to go the the board, they meet every other month and the location of the meeting varies. The board handles massive amounts of business during a meeting. Nothing gets past the "gate keepers" unless every t is crossed and every i dotted, then it goes to the board.
You can check out the meeting cycle on line and kinda get an idea of when they meet.
The best thing to do is hire a service to take care of everything. Mike Holt has this service on his main site:

If you need assistance completing your state exam application, please contact :
API - Dawn R. Johnson: 1-800-947-6939 www.apiprocessing.com

She helped us out a while back. I think it cost about $1,500.00 at the time.

Good luck brother.

If you are thinking of working in SE Florida make sure to stop in St Augustine and get a couple of gallons of water from the fountain of youth to go. You will need at least that much just to get through some of the building departments.

I'm currently going through the same problem. The information I found is the testing process is going through alot of changes. Both the technical and business exam is computer based. They can both be taken before your paperwork has been approved. I was told I will recieve a letter with more details about the new exam process sometime in October. I fully expect them to drop the ball and me spending hours on the phone trying to find someone who knows anything about this letter. Good luck.

I didn't have any problem getting Florida, New Jersey on the other hand has been totally different. They are extremely rude and want everything and a pint of blood to just apply!

What you are dealing with is the same you find at nearly every large government entity and corporation accross America today. The DBPR is understaffed. The staff they have is illtrained, underpaid, and overworked.

It is a shame that you should have to use a "license application" agency, but that is really what it has come down to.

The biggest problem is the lack of consistency. About 50% of the applications that get submitted go through with no issues or delay. The other 50% either get lost, misfiled, improperly reviewed, or get flaged for rejection for one reason or the other.

The best thing to do is get a single contact person at the DPBR and make sure they are the onlt person that you deal with or works your application prior to its submittal to the board.

I have some friends on the ECLB, but no longer have contacts in their department of the DBPR. However, if any of you ever have any problems with your BCAIB (FS 468) applications, let me know and I can forward you someone that can take car of you.

Really? For me it was painless. I thought they did a great job. Hmmm funny. I guess it all depends on who and what day you get them!

Exactly. For many, the process is simple, fast, and, without any issues. For others, it is a nightmare. There never seems to be any in between....

r

So it is now computer based? I took the exam in July and they were talking about it then how many times a year is the exam givin now?

If I had it to do over again, I would absolutely, positively, without a doubt utilize a license agency that does it everyday.

Brian is spot on about the reasons, and it is sad to see it this bad, but it is what it is.

Save yourself some headache and spend a little cash to make it happen. The time value of money more than makes up for it; although with the financial markets doing what they are doing, maybe not anymore!

Funny - I had no problem with the DPBR at all. Filled out the forms, took the test, passed, got a license. No worries.

Maybe it was because I took Mike's prep course first.
