Steve, it has to do with light polution and Turtles. Artificial light is confusing to sea turtles and their hatchlings.

If we are not careful these kind will have us all out of work. It won't be to long before they try to shut down all the fossil fuel power plants. And forget about nuke power.

OMG, LOL!

Just found out it is common to use low pressure sodium to meet the fc level, then add 10 % metal halide bollards to improve the color rendering around the pool.

Lot of hippie turtle huggers here in Florida!

I thought that was a California problem. There is a city a few miles away that spent millions of dollars so a few frogs could get under the highway safely. What a waste.

Low pressure sodium, 15w bug lights and shielded yellow LED fixtures.

Did several projects here on the beach and had to deal with a group called "Turtle Time". A radical offshoot of the "Save the Manatee" club. I want to be responsible with the environment, but who want to eat at a beachfront restaurant using bug lights and Low pressure sodium? $20 for a steak that looks grey? Yuch

Turtle time forces the pier walkway lighting off during the hatching season and the county looked at several options. Had a field test with the county and Turtle Time, they freaked out on an amber LED walkway light that emitted less than 5 footcandles. But if someone trips and gets hurt, who cares. Seems the white light attracted predators for the baby turtles, not good either.

Turtle time has a web site somewhere that has their beach lighting recommendations. They do not like contractors, engineers or the people that hire us.

Hope this helps.

It would seem the only acceptable light is moonlight. Would it be possible to simulate the lighting level of a full moon, on a clear night? Then you could dim it accordingly based on the amount of ambient light there is each night.

Sounds like an interesting project, and a good money maker!

Thanks boater bill, I will look that up.

kingpb, its the moon that draws the turtles back into the ocean. The artificial light located opposite the ocean is the problem, even if it simulated moonlight it would draw the turtles the wrong way, into pools and into the street etc.

I guess LPS is the only solution, ugly as helll but seems the only thing to do.

If someone trips and gets hurt I dont know how to defend in court that I didnt provide the recommended lite for humans so the turtles could survive better....

GE Lighting website used to have certifed Turtle safe light fixtures. They had low (or is that high) cutoff angles to minimizehorizontal light spread. We used them on an outdoor stairway up a boiler to try and hide the 10 story structure from the neighbors at night. I didn't see any dead turtles, so it must have worked.
