Good evening fellow Electricians,

I currently live and work in Jacksonville, FL.
I have been in the electrical industry for 8 years, working my way from a helper in the field to a Foreman position for the last 3 years, managing contracts ranging from $500,000 up to $2.5MM - and now I am about to embark on a new journey, in a new environment, learning how to Estimate.
Considering one of my goals from the very beginning was to hold an unlimited EC license in the state of Florida, I wanted to know the step by step process/what costs are going to be involved after passing the exams & what cost would be involved maintaining an active license.
Please be very detailed in your responses so I can obtain a full understanding. I won’t be using the license for much, as I currently work for an electrical contractor - but I must complete my goal.

THANKS

Congrats on leveling up into estimating-that’s a solid next step.

For a Florida unlimited EC license, after passing the exams you’ll typically need to: submit your application, show proof of experience, pass a background/credit check, and provide insurance (liability + workers’ comp if applicable). Costs usually include application fees, exam fees (already done), licensing fee, insurance (varies but often $1k–$3k/year), and biennial renewal fees. You’ll also need continuing education hours every renewal cycle.

Since you’re not planning to actively use it, your main ongoing costs will just be insurance (if required to keep it active) and renewal + CE credits.

Best move: check directly with the Florida DBPR for the exact current fees and requirements-they do change.

Good morning! I too am in your area. Just having completed the same process three years ago, I strongly recommend having someone on your behalf (advocate) to help you navigate the processes of obtaining your Unlimited EC license. I used a gentleman named Pierre, but unfortunately he passed away while helping me. A gentleman named Jim Hunniford stepped in to help. I've attached a picture of his contact information. I can't remember exactly what I paid Pierre, but I think it was right around $1,200. They handle everything for you such as submitting the appropriate paperwork for your application, meeting with the licensing board on your behalf (if necessary) and even suggesting pre-exam study courses. Mike Holt's pre-exam course is the best, in my opinion.

I've since passed my NASCLA and I'm using Contractor Training Center to help file all of the paperwork in the NASCLA states I'm getting licensed (https://contractortrainingcenter.com/). Mike Holt may offer the same service, I'm not sure.
Quick guesstimate on costs;
Jim Hunniford, Contractor Training, Mike Holt (?) to aid in the process- $1,200
DBPR - $350
Pre-Exam Books, tabs, highlights and practice tests - $1,800
Exam Fees (trade and business) - $500

I believe Florida is still testing for the NEC 2020 Code. They may have switched to the 2023 code, but your advocate can help you with that.

Once you pass, you'll need insurance, license fee and CE credits as ChristopherCross mentioned above.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
