I received my approval to take the State of Florida exam for Unlimited Electrical Contractor and am buying the references required.
The total for the books (purchased online) is $2,110.75.
Has anyone purchased these recently with better results?
Ul 681 and UL 365 alone are $448.00 each (plus shipping).
If you have any suggestions as to where to purchase the books, it would be appreciated.
Thanks

I cannot help you with prices on the books , but for that kind of money I would consider taking the exam with a chance of failing it just to see if I really needed all this stuff !

You also may pass the exam!! and wish you never spent that kind of money in the first place, best of luck with your choice and the test.

If you have been approved to take the exam, the UL references are free in the form of a PDF file from the ECLB. See the candidate information booklet for details on ordering the references. You don't need a hard copy for the exam.

All you really need for the exam itself is the NEC, NFPA 72, NFPA 780, The Florida Contractors Manual, The Florida Fire Prevention Code, and The Florida Principles and Practices Manual. All the other books are fluff you may want to review, but are not absolutely necessary.

The Florida Contractors Manual contains most of the business law sections, the FFPC contains the NFPA 101, NFPA 1, and FAC sections on Fire/Burglar alarm contractors, the FL P&P manual contains all the Florida Administrative Code provisions, the Florida Statutes, and DBPR rules.

THE P&P manual can be ordered directly from BOAF here: http://www.boaf.net/, the FFPC can be ordered directly from here: http://www.fldfs.com/sfm/florida_fire_prevention_code_2004.htm

Something that helped me a lot, if they allow it, is a tabbed and highlighted code book. I failed several times because I would run out of time. It makes it much faster to look up answers that you don't know. About $175 + shipping but worth it. Then you can resell it on e-bay! I hope to put mine on after the masters on August 19th!

The reason I'm going to sell it is because it is the loose leaf type. It won't last long in my office (a truck)!! I have a regular paper back that can take the punishment! Besides I'm industrial and most of my stuff is just repair and I don't need one very often.

Yikes -- that's way too much money. The only reference I got to use on my master electrician exam was the NEC, and they provided it (and a calculator) at the exam.

My state EC license is unlimited, like most (and there's no separate exam for it). They used to issue limited "Class B" licenses (for journeyman, master, and EC), but they stopped 20 years ago. They allow renewals for the few people that still have them.

Why are things so complicated down in Florida? Seems like a monumental task to get an unlimited state EC license.

Hey Doug:

Check HERE .

$892.00 out the door. And, as Bryan said, the UL references are free.

"I personally prefer to tab and highlight code books myself."

They allow tabs and highlighting, but many of the exams prohibit any notes in the book. If you have writing in it, they could take it away for the exam.

Is that one on concrete mixtures serious? Do electrical contractors have to design concrete mixtures? The correct answer should be "Send over 5 bags of 5000 psi QuickCrete".
D0001 Design & Control of Concrete Mixtures-14th Edition $52.00

Maybe I have just been lucky, but I have taken nearly 10 certification exams over the years and have never had a problem with any of my references and I have tons of handwritten notes in my code books...

Agreed, and also be aware that the tabs have to be permanent. No 3M "stickies" allowed. I saw them make a guy who had literally hundreds of stickies in all of his books sit there with a stapler and staple all of them in. He lost about an hour on the test and failed. All that hard work and prep for nothing.

Yep. I had two questions from that book on my test. And one from Engineering Sign Structures.
