In a commercial parking garage. Do the light fixtures need to be protected from physical damage? These are incadescent and flourescent type fixtures.
Where is it inthe 2002 NEC.

Our state OSHA requires fluorescent tubes to be protected if they're under a certain height, seven feet if I remember correctly.

Residential Florescent tub covers

Residential Florescent tub covers

Is there a height or location requirement for a florescent tub to have a protective cover in a private residence?

Having seen more than one exposed tube get hit and explode in thousands of shards, I think it is at least a very good idea to protect them in some way.

I worked in a restraunt when i was in school, imagine how much food was lost and cleaning there was when a 8ft T12 got dropped off a ladder...

Depends on the restaurant... Did the guy sitting on the toilet smoking a cigar while stirring the soup in a kettle on a hot plate between his legs have to clean it up?:)

Protection for Florescent tubes

Protection for Florescent tubes

I worked for a fellow once that lost an eye from a florescent tube. It happened like most things quick and without warning.

In my opinion, they should be protected anyplace that they may be damaged. This includes homes and work shops.

I wish I could find such a requirement.

After reading these posts, I agree with you: however, In the real world about the only time there would be any enforcement would be when there was an investigation for some reason or another. The T8 tubes don't break nearly as easily as the T12's so I like the idea of replacing all the T12s.
