Is their a formula for converting tons to amps?

If you're trying to get a ballpark number for estimating a circuit for an air-handler, ok. If you're trying to size an air-handler, check with a Mechanical Engineer - there's a lot more than just KW.

You can use that website to find out how many nits in a Footlambert, too.

You have to consider the efficiency:

KW/ton = 12/EER
KW/ton = 12/COP/3.412

Ton AC to Amps
One ton of frig.=12000 BTU/hour
1 watt=8.533 BTU/hour

4 tons x 12,000=48,000 BTU/hour

48,000/8.533=5,625 watts

5,625/208 volts=27 amps
