Formula for wire size?

Can someone tell me where to find the formula to determine wire size in AC and DC?

Table 310.16 is good for about a foot per volt. e.g. 120 Volt circuits are good for about 125 feet. 240 Volt circuits are good for about 250 feet. 480 Volt circuits are good for about 500 feet. Once you get beyond a foot per volt, get out the pencil and paper and start looking at voltage drop.

No such formula exists. One does not calculate the wire size. One calculates the load, and then looks up in a table to get a wire size that can handle that load.
