Yes I am studing for a test I had a ? It asked current carried continually not to exceed 700 amps per square inch cross section in aluminum bus bar. What is the ampacity of a 1-1/2 round aluminum bus bar. Ok where would I find this formular is it in the code book or could someone tell me the formular, if so would the same formular work for copper bus bar?

Re: formulars

I doesn't seem necesary to look under the aux. gutters as they already gave him the 700A per sq. in. for AL bus.
Am I reading into the question to much or not enough?

Re: formulars

Ron has it correct.

1.5" round aluminum bar has a radius of .75"

A = 3.1417 * R * R

A = 3.1417 * .75 * .75

A = 3.1417 * 0.5625

A = 1.7672062 Sq inches

1.7672062 Sq" * 700A = 1237.0443 Amps

Re: formulars

After further review by the Replay Official, the ruling on the field (by gwz2 and Ron) stands as called. The rule is that the area of a circle is ?pi? times the square of the radius, or equivalently, one quarter of ?pi? times the square of the diameter. Frank is charged with a time out.
