Just sharing. I found a "goof ring" or box extender that works better in a lot of places, compared to the standard designs.
Just sharing, I have no financial interest in the product or company:

These rest on the old box, so they only work when the old box is just too deep, not when it's at some crazy angle. But they are nice and solid in that case, seal the gap, and work better than a knock off brand of the same found on Amazon. These are also UL listed.

I've always preferred the Arlington series such as the BE1
Good for up to 1-1/2"

Although, can't control when additional layers of wall coverings happen, like slat wall in retail, or tile, or wood paneling, anywhere, it always irks me when boxes are not set properly, this is mostly residential were they are set 3/8" or less with 1/2" drywall, but happens in non residential with 1/2" rings being used with 5/8" drywall where it should be 3/4".

Agreed. I always use plaster rings 1/8" deeper than the drywall to allow for the heads of the 8-32 box-cover screws.

Not every goof ring works in every situation.
The most frequent situation I face is when the "electrician" set the new work boxes at stud depth.
Happens all the damn time. The ReceptXtenders work well in those cases, except of course the installers also nailed the boxes sloppy.

FYI, Garvin offers metallic versions that provide ~1/2" and ~3/4" extensions. I think they were around $5 a few years ago but they're more now. I don't think plastic ones would be allowed in the Chicago area even though they would be fine almost anywhere else.

Thanks. Never know they made a metal type. Never a big fan of the plastic extensions especially outside of a house due to unsure if the p!astic extension types were approved for use in say a one hour fire rated wall.

I use those a lot in the various thicknesses provided on overlay, tile jobs when the boxes are existing.
They are very helpful on keeping the tile installers from creeping into my switch boxes.

Are you saying that the electrician is securing the box flush with the stud all the time?
Time for anew electrician maybe?
