Is there someone who deals with fountains and swimming pools often that can tell me if the following is the correct interpretation of Art 680.
680 can be a very tricky Article. Fountains (part 5 General) indicates that Parts 1 and 5 apply to permanently installed fountains.
((Part 5) 680.55 Grounding Methods) indicates that part 2 be used for grounding.
J boxes and other enclosures for other than underwater use must comply with 680.24.
If underwater J boxes are used they are to comply with 680.52(B) (1) (2).
(The question is, what J boxes must comply with 680.24 (part 2) and what J boxes must comply with 680.52 (B)(1)(2)?
Well I don?t believe the installation in question has submersed junction boxes that might be used to loop together multiple light fixture.
The other question is whether a J box is needed between the below ground vault containing the control equipment and the light fixture in the fountain?
Other factors include whether the fixture is a wet niche, dry niche, or No-niche.
Wet niche fixture requires that the conduit shall be installed from the forming shell to a J box or enclosure conforming to the requirements of 680.24. 680.24 (A)(1) indicates that the J box must be listed for use for swimming pools
And comply with 1, 2, and 3. In addition the J box or enclosure must comply with 680.24 (2) A thru F.
The same is required for No-niche fixture 680.24(A).
680.23(C)(2) indicates that a dry niche fixture requires a provision for drainage and does not require a J box, but if one is provided it is not required to be elevated; however, 680.51 (F) requires that the fixture be removable for relamping Without the water level of the fountain being drained or lowered. Can a dry niche fixture be removed with out reducing the water level of the fountain?
Conclusion. 680.51(A) requires that if operating in access of 15v, the circuit must be GFCI protected, If operating at 15v or less the installation must comply with 680.23(A)(2). If the light fixture is Wet or No-niche fixture, it must have a junction box and comply with 680.24 A thru F. A junction box is not required for a dry niche fixture.
