I have been asked to bid on replacing an FPE panel. The existing panel is a split buss and is rated at 125A. I would like to know if most of you replace with a 100A main breaker or do you size for the 125A?

It depends on the load being used. 125-amp main breaker panels are not common here in Ma. and is probably more expensive than a 200 amp.If there wasn't a huge load and they are on a tight budget, I would probably stay with 100 amp. Although I like to talk everyone into 200 amp for future.

I would first do a load calc and then see if it is close to 100 amps, if so, why not upgrade to a 200 amp service and allow for future expansion?

If the load calc is low enough, just install a 100 amp main and panel and be done with it. Why spend extra on a 125 when it won't make a substantial difference?

Since FPE's never trip anyway, you probably already have a 200+ amp service there now.

First you would want to make sure the uility side is 125A ready (Mostly likely it is). Once verified, and all checks out with the serving utility, then you should be able to proceed with the panel change--assuming no new loads are being added to the house. If any new loads are being added, then doing a DLC would be smart.
