Free fixture

I finally got around to installing the extra recessed downlight that my wife wanted in our upstairs hallway, I found that the electrician that wired the house must have thought that another downlight was a good idea, too. When I crawled my attic to see if my 'proposed' location would work, I found a preinstalled and wired downlight can, whose face had been sheetrocked over, exactly where I was going to cut in the new downlight. Before I call the electrician and thank him for the free rough in, was this a violation of NEC 370-29?

Re: Free fixture

I was just at a house where, upon tearing out the ceiling, they found a duct going down into the wall of their dining room with no corersponding register...

Went to the same model house up the street, what do you know, they have a register in there diining room! Upon closer inspection, the drywall where it was supposed to be bulged out about 1/2". I know it's production housing, but c'mon, a 12"x6" register!!?? How do you miss that!

I'm not sure, but this is very, very interesting to boot. Why not remove it, and patch the hole. I never heard of this. I thought if you can no long abandon cable, you can no longer abandon something of this sort. I'm the wrong person to answer this, though! :)

Re: Free fixture

LOL,here it happens all the time recessed cans entire room worth of outlets, cabe, phone drops have even seen onQ sytems burried by drywallers.easy to find a flourescent tube and a twirly flat screwdriverand a drywall saw. When it gets extensive I call the C.M. and have him send the drywallers there to uncover what they covered.A switch here and outlet there no big deal.I tell all the guys stay away from knock down ceilings. To hard to patch so get the drywallers to uncover those. This is if the trim crew even opens the print to see what should be there ;)

Re: Free fixture

They ought to make an NEC equivalent for sheet-rockers because they buried 2 hi-hats, 2 receptacles and a telephone outlet on the most recent $1 million house that I worked in, not to mention the numerous wires they cut with their "Roto-Zip Rebel" !!!

Re: Free fixture

I handle it this way.Since if we goof and do drywall damage they will charge us,seems only fair to handle any barried items with first a charge to investigate what and where there is a barried item.Charge for this some min $$$,now either i cut it out or send drywallers back.Either way i charge for return trip or cutting it out.Backcharge and they will learn.Down here in northern MEXICO there is no point in trying to talk to them. The back charges will get to them and you will see them starting to care.I for one am getting tired of dealing with NO SPEAKA ENGLISH.Dealt with it again today.Sad when we must deal with walking into a house and listen to there music and do our job.Just when did Florida get deleeted from USA ?

Re: Free fixture

In my state, if someone covers electrical work before it's inspected, the law says they are responsible for all costs associated with opening the wall and closing it back up.

Re: Free fixture

I had two lighting outlets covered just this week. When I offered to handle it the GC's lead guy said he'd make sure it gets taken care of. That's probably how he got to be the lead guy.

Re: Free fixture

This is a norm around here. Not a problem to find but can be a real headache if allot of them get buried.

Use a yard stick to find the bulge in the wall.
Use a tracer
cut holes where you think it is. whoops I almost found it. :D :D
You would think after enough whoops they would start marking the floor to remind them where the box's are.

Re: Free fixture

hey Jim Walker.....wiring some receptacles at a new house a while back...our spanish speaking friends were laying the brick work near where I was working! Nearby tech school offered a course in conversational spanish! Took a few weeks (2 nites a week) to pick up on it, but it seems to help! Anyway, friends were working on scaffolding just laying away those brick and talking continuously! When I completed my receptacles, I told them to have a nice day and be careful on the scaffold! (In Spanish, of Course) One of them fell off the scaffold and the other two made a hasty retreet to the truck! They just sit in the truck, staring at me! Boy was that a lot of fun! Don't know a lot of Spanish, just enough to keep them wondering!!! Might be worth the effort for you!

Re: Free fixture

wanta have some real fun / on a large job yell out IMIGRATION watch them all run.
If i moved to mexico i would learn to speak spanish because thats there languish.I think we should exspect the same

Re: Free fixture

Jim' when you yell"IMIGRATION" doesn't it slow you down as far as being ready for your "Drive By" inspections?

Spanish speaking people in FL shouldn't bother you, they were actualy there before you arrived in the 70's.

Re: Free fixture

when I was in high school, about 30 years ago, foreign languages were offered but not required! My 17 year old is a senior this year and it is required to take at least one foreign language...the choices are spanish or french....she chose spanish! Our spanish speaking friends are here to stay...they pick the crops, lay the brick and block for new construction, perform landscaping duties for many contractors, etc! The government, in the near future, will issue drivers licenses to our friends so they can travel without resistance! Everyone needs to learn to cope with this, learn a little conversational spanish! Get to know a spanish speaking person....you may be surprized!

Re: Free fixture

No mas travajo. Es tiempo para nosotras va cantina para tres o quatro cervesas!

Re: Free fixture

Ahem. I appreciate the fact that most of you guys have run across "mystery" receptacles and high hats but I think the migrant worker rant belongs in a different forum.

Re: Free fixture

I'm not being disrespectful!

Edit: Towards anybody.
