I recently posted a couple of pictures of a 400 amp fused disconnect with "C" clamps on the fuse holder. Well I went back there today to get a second look and work up a plan of attack. First is, I did a quick IR scan of the fuse holders, at the "c" clamps 85 degrees F. On the discolored (no "c" clamp) fuse holder 125 degree F. These temp. readings were at 10:30 a.m. about an hour before the heavy loads will start to occur. There is 10 units tapped off of this disconnect (vintage 1959) two of the units have 200 amp 3/0 feeders, the rest very about 125 each. I doubt anyone has done a load calculation since 1959, let alone pull a permit for electrical work.

When you said C clamp I was thinking of the fuse clamp that is made for the purpose, I used to have some. But no you meant C clamp!

The fuse jaws on the right hand side look overheated too.

"Electric heat can't be beat!" Old 1970's jingle from the folks who sell electric power.

I found this today. The blower single-phased when the starter was manually pressed, but, fortunately, the starter wouldn't latch with L1 open.

The center of the shaft is completely burned away, so the left contacts don't move. There is no center contact, so the relocated red wire is unfused.

I don't think a C-clamp would have helped. Needless to say, the disconnect doesn't.

Nice, I think Joe the Handyman has been very busy. looks like the ends of the insulation are discolored too.
