from light to fan/light on a three way switch

I have a hanging stairwell light that is operated by a three way switch, one at the bottom and one at the top.

I would like to replace the light fixture with a fan/light to move air throughout the house.

Is there anyway to do this with the existing wiring? My simple brain is not seeing the solution if there is one. Is there some kind of remote switch I don't know about?

I want to be able to operate the light and the fan independently. Light needs to switch a bottom and top of stairs like it does now, fan can be switched from wherever works.

thanks!

You can use a fan/light with a remote control receiver inside the base. Feed it with continuous hot power and place a wall mounted remote at top and bottom.
If you wanr a strictly wired control using the existing wiring, I am afraid you are SOL.

You would be in luck if the leg is a 3 wire, (black, Red, White). This way you can use the black for the light and red for fan.

thanks,

Can anyone supply a product name/number for the remote switching. I have never used them before. Who makes them?

Check out Lutron's switches. I don't have my model number handy but pretty sure it is a Maestro fan control. One part goes in the fan canopy and the other mounts in a wall box. No neutral required and can be used as a 3-way.

This seems like the setup I would need. Two switches and I am assuming that grated module is what gets wired into the fan housing? Too bad they say they are not recommended for LED lights, any thoughts on that?

That's the model I have plus I have the one with the remote.
The reason they say LEDs won't work is because the LEDs usually don't put enough load on the unit. But my fan light works fine most of the time, probably because it has 4 bulbs. I get a slight flicker if the lights are at full bright. I can back it off just a tiny bit and they stop.

Lutron sells a MLC (minimum load capacitor) which I have used and have some. I just haven't taken time to install it here at home. They even ship with the RF switch and I think the Caseta line. It just puts an additional load on so the LED will work better.
