FS or FD

Does anyone know the actual defintion of FS or FD boxes? I have been told that it is function shallow / function deep. What distinguishes these boxes from other enclosures, and why does the code feel it needs to define a FS or FD box as NOT a conduit body per the definition of conduit body?

The F stands for ferrous, Greek for iron. S shallow and D deep.
