I have a residential electric furnace name plate states maximum overcurrent protection 60amps , this rules out #6 Romex correct , what type of copper wire do you install in this situation. The furnace is a 10kw unit , the amp draws listed on nameplate ( for several different models ) are all about 57 amps.

At 57 amps, you are correct #6 NM is out; under the '08, #6 SE is out;
next best might be MC or conduit/THHN unless you want to increase wire size

10KW/240 volts = 41.7 amps x 1.25 = 52 amps -- #6, 75*c copper is OK.
Makes sense for a 60 amp breaker.
Double check the nameplate for the equipment being installed.

My bet would be there is a blower motor involved. I see a lot of 10kw units with a 57 amp MCA nameplate.

Depending on the brand a 10 kw unit may actually be 10 kw , 9,6 kw etc but remember there is the motor load that must be added to it. I have seen quite a few 10kw units that req. 56 or 57 amps.

You must have skipped over what I quoted and made bold.
NM and SE is not 75 C copper.
I was thinking you were saying it ruled out #6 NM from this install because it was 60C but you meant it ruled out NM from the 75C. I see that now.:)

Make and Model#?

Do you not believe me? :grin: The last install I made like this was almost 2 years ago. I have no idea of the brand and it was a job with a heating contractor that I never worked with before. I do want to add that I have seen it a few times so I will guess that Trane was one brand but not sure.

Dennis. I'm like you in that I check these things daily but I just read the MCA and MOCP off the nameplate, They are all just big gray, brown or green boxes :) some seem to have a MCA of 54/55 some a bit higher.
I do recall that one brand has a "A" or "B" model with different currents...apparently bigger blowers.

either that or you are making it all up... :)
