I was informed that pre-wired furniture systems, such as open area workstations with pre-wired outlets or furniture outlets connected by modular jumpers, are not permitted in Chicago. I am wondering if this is correct? I looked up the Chicago Electrical Code Article 605 but it's not very clear in the code language. Does that mean all furniture outlets need to be wired by flexible conduits mounted under the workstations? Thank you for your help.

I've always heard, and reliable rumours indicate, that Chicago Electricians locked up the city ages ago-- no Romex (R), all wiring in conduit, etc. Gotta keep those DIYers under control! Supposedly they even get persnickety at trade shows inside city limits!
Pre-wired furniture sounds like something that will require master electricians to even take out of the box!

Thanks, everyone. I have confirmed with the City of Chicago that Pre-wire/Modular furniture systems are not permitted. Every wiring in furniture should be hardwired by a licensed electrician.
