Hello every, I have a few question regarding MV system;

1. What is the purpose of fuse cutouts at the overhead lines?

2. I'm doing a project that I will have to do a transition from the pole to underground feeder then to a pad mounted transformer. Do I need a fuse cutout to do this transition? or it's only needed if I have pole mounted transforme?

I really appreciate the help I get from this forum!!

1. To protect the rest of the system from damaging or shutting down if there is a fault in the feeder. Your home has branch-circuit protection for the same reasons.

2. Most likely, yes, and for the same reasons. Most underground runs have fuses at both ends and can be fed from either direction, and are expensive to replace.

We usually protect feeders at the supply end, and not the load end. The power company should be able to answer these questions.

AS Larry says, to protect the OH line if you have a fault in the cable or
other problems. The fuse size should be based on the size of the transformer.
Check with the utility on size.

Because otherwise, a fault or overload on a branch circuit would kill power to the entire house.

Added: That is, if there was a was to find a breaker size that could both protect the branch-circuit wiring and carry the entire load. That means you'd have to wire an entire house with 3/0 cu for a 200a service.

Fuse Cut-outs on overhead lines are used to protect
the feeder/system of a utility in order not to tripped off the whole system/feeder by just a fault from the primary riser down to the transfomer
or branch circuits.

Either pole mounted or pad mounted transformer still the utiltiy company
will require you with this.

1. looking at it from the utility side, if the fuse cutouts are between the utility lines and the customer loads, the fuses are there to protect the utility lines should a fault occur inside the customer facility

2. pole mounted transformer - fuse - underground feeder - fuse - load

pole - fuse - pad mounted transformer - load
