There are two types of disconnect switches - the fused and the non-fused. What is the purpose of the non-fused disconnect switch and when should it be used?

Non fused disconnects are typically used when only a disconnect is required and additional overcurrent protection is not required or needed.

Non-fused disconnects are very common for use as the disconnecting means for A/C units, motors and applicances.

Dale,
Sometimes only a non-fused disconnect switch is required, but they are not rated with a high withstand (shirt circuit rating), so a fused disconnect is needed to provide the ability to disconnect and the needed short circuit rating.
