Is it true that the receptacle outlet for a garage door opener needs be on a dedicated 20A circuit? If so, then what about the GFI requirement? I thought the GFI needs to be readily accessible, which would preclude use of a GFI receptacle in the ceiling.
 
If you use a GFCI receptacle in the garage ceiling it would need to be rather low. IMO 7' is the maximum to still comply. Are you referring to 210.11(C)(4)?

210.11(C)(4) Garage Branch Circuits. In addition to the number of
branch circuits required by other parts of this section, at least
one 120-volt, 20-ampere branch circuit shall be installed to
supply receptacle outlets in attached garages and in detached
garages with electric power. This circuit shall have no other
outlets.
Exception: This circuit shall be permitted to supply readily accessible
outdoor receptacle outlets.
 
yOU CAN HAVE ALL THE GARAGE RECEPTACLES AND THE OVERHEAD DOOR OPENER ON ONE 20 AMP CIRCUIT

Since 210.52(G) requires receptacles in each bay not higher than 5-1/2 ft, it should not be easy to GHF at that point and then feed you door opener receptacles.
 
There is 210.23(A)(2) which would require the GDO to be less then 50% of the circuit rating if it also supplies "lighting units, cord-and-plug connected utilization equipment not fastened in place, or both".
