May I know whether a garage door opener is consider a portable motor. We have seen many manufacturers using plug and cord. We trying to interpret the code whether plug and cord can be used.

When have you seen a hard wired GDO ???

If it is a residential GDO I have only seen them shipped cord and plug connected.

If it is a commercial GDO I have only seen them hardwired.

I did not take the time to look but I am fairly certain UL lists residential and commercial 'door operators' separately with different requirements.

IMO, it doesn't have to be portable to be cord-and-plug-connected.

400.7(A) (7) and (8).

I agree there are different requirements. If I recall correctly OSHA or ANSI come into play on commercial/industrial openers. There are additional safety requirements if you want any type of Automatic operation.
