I need some help here folks. I had a door contractor come to our business and install a garage door. It is an industrial garage door but a garage door just the same. It has a 480 volt 3ph motor with a controller mounted at the top. The company installed photo eyes on the outside of the building and took the lead wires from the eyes and inserted the wire into the end of a piece of EMT, no connector. Then they ran the conduit up the concrete and used die cast set screw couplings and one hole straps to secure it. When they inserted the wire into the conduit, I was confused as to where the joints were at. They made there joints and stuffed them into the conduit, and then put a big glob of silicone on the end of the conduit. Rain-tight. These wires are low voltage (24 VAC) but I know that for one that joints are to be made in a box or even a conduit body ( if the cu.in. is listed). This install I know doesn't meet 300.13(A) or 300.15. What I am having a problem with is the separation between the EMT and the concrete. Doesn't that have to be separated to allow water to flow and not to accumulate?

It's an industrial facility, no permit required. Facility is the AHJ.

In Mass an industrial facility is required to have a yearly maint. electrical permit, no inspection needed. If they do any new or additional work a electrical permit is required w/ the inspection done by the AHJ. Maybe its different in your area.

If the 24 volt control circuit is a Class 2 circuit, then those 2 sections do not apply. See 725.3.

Unfortunately it does say that. With that article, it gives anyone the go ahead to totally disregard any type of quality of workmanship and to basically let them do whatever they want to. Just because it is okay to do inferior work, doesn't mean you have to. But, if they use an approved raceway to protect the wires from physical damage, then doesn't that mean that they have to do the install according to Art 300 and the type of raceway that they are using? If that is the case then they can basically tape the ends of the pipe together and say this is installed.
