Garage for duplex

If you have an existing duplex and want to build a detached garage which will be separated down the middle (one side for each tenant), would you bring power to each side of the garage from their respective duplex unit panels? Owner wants each side of the garage to have a small subpanel.

This could run into the multiple-feeders-to-one-structure issue, unless the garage can somehow be considered two separate, even if adjoining structures, like the duplex itself, or townhouses with dividing walls.
