210-8(a)exception No.2 (99NEC) permits a single receptacle for a single appliance or a duplex receptacle for 2 appliances, located in a dedicated space and not easily moved, to be exempt from the GFCI requirement.

Re: garage frezzer gfci ??

In the process of wiring my own home I found that the cost difference between providing GFCI protection to circuits is so minimal that I have decided that when in doubt, add the protection. For example, when using a GFCI receptacle to protect a circuit the cost difference was about $5. Using a GFCI circuit breaker was considerable higher and less practical because the require too much panel space. How long do you think it will be before it is required on all lighting and receptacle circuits?

Re: garage frezzer gfci ??

Bob,

The issue with a GFCI on a freezer circuit is not about safety, it is about nuisance tripping of the GFCI caused by the freezer compressor. There are similar issues with GFCIs on other appliance circuits, such as those for refrigerators, washers, sump pumps, etc.

If it were only a safety issue then there would most likely be no discussion.
