I just did a service call , the home owner went on vacation came home to find many of her plants dead . There were two GFCI receptacles on separate circuits , both tripped , no one home , one feeds a fountain the other a 120 power supply for the irrigation system the power supply secondary is 24-volts.

This lady has a small fortune in plantings, so I read the instruction book ,no mention of GFCI .
I then installed a single receptacle NON GFCI for this power supply for the 24 volt irrigation system .

Opinions on whether this is in violation would be appreciated

Many of the better quality timers have hard wire provisions. I'd recommend a new timer that will let you hard wire. Then you've eliminated your GFCI concern.

I agree with Ron.

210.8(A)(2) requires GFCI protection of receptacles in a garage. The Exceptions to this are receptacles that are not readily accessible and single receptacles that are located within a dedicated space for an appliance. I don't think that an irrigation control would constitute an appliance with a dedicated space in reference to the exception.

Would the receptacle behind this power supply be considered readily accessible??
It is at least 6' 7" from the ground and there are two other duplex receptacles GFCI protected that are readily accessible.

I suppose I could fashion a removable strap to hold the power supply in place.

i think its good under ex.2 a single rec. when in normal use not easily moved and cord and plug connected. does it comply with 400.7(A)(6), (A)(7) or (A)(8). is the control panel identified for flex cord connection, i would say yes if it was supplied with the control panel. while the panel during normal use is not easily moved from one place to another it can be removed for maintenance and repair. i think its good under 210.8(A)(2)ex.2 and 400.7(A)(8). ex.2 has nothing to do with accessibility.

I would allow this as you put in a single receptecale and have a piece of equipment plugged into it. I also allow it for built in vacume systems and FAU's.

And I would allow it under Ex. 2 of 210.8(A)(2)
