I am about to start a remodle job on a home with a attached garage that is at grade level. the customer is going to remove the rollup door and close it in to make a bedroom. the garage is gfci protected like it should be. my question is since this is going to be a bedroom it will need to be afci protected but will it also still need gfci since it will still be at grade level? what will be the result of having gfci protected recpticals on a afci breaker?

Re: garage room

the gfci protection would not be required once converted to a bedroom. but if you want to keep gfci for extra protection, I wouldn't use the existing circut to feed the rest of the bedroom without being absolutely certain of what is on the existing gfci circut.

and don't forget about the interconnected battery back-up smoke detector in the new bedroom that may be required in your area

Re: garage room

I see what you are saying but what about the fact the room will still be at grade level and will still have concrete floor covered with carpet? wouldnt the grade level come into play for all recps. being requried to be gfci.?

This is a sensible question and I can understand your concern. The NEC will not require the installation of GFCI protection, But will require the installation of AFCI protection. If you have a concern about grade level, there are a lot of dwellings built at grade level. If you are still concerned, why not try to convince the carpenter/customer to put sleepers and a plywood floor in?

I have an idea.IF you are concerned to this degree, watch the carpet get install so you make sure its put in right (with no bare spots)

Re: garage room

There is an easy solution. Cutler hammer makes a listed combo AFCI/GFCI circuit breaker. Its only a few dollars more than a standard AFCI breaker.

Re: garage room

Seems you've been misinformed somewhere. There is no requirement that grade level rooms with or without concrete floors have GFI protected receptacles.

Yes, The breakers Tom mentioned do provide class A GFCI protection.
The part numbers are BR120AFGF, BR115AFGF, CH120AFGF, CH115AFGF

Unfortunately some people think that all AFCI breakers provide GFCI protection since the plug in GFI testers trip some of the older models.

Re: garage room

I must agree with hbiss since this will now become a "living area" it is not requried to be gfci. but since it will be a bed room it will need afci protection. thanks for all the input
