Whenever I get confronted with a shop/garage question, I always respond with "Well, Norm Abrams only uses two tools at a time.... a saw of some sort along with the dust collection system. Or the air compressor may kick on once in a while, but usually only when he's using a pnuematic tool and not an electric one." Chances are, there's more power usage for the lights in his shop than anything else, considering it's now a TV studio.
For most homeowner / DIY woodworking shops, 60 amps is plenty. 100 if you've got a big honkin' welder
