This question is from a mostly residential sparky,so be gentle.

I have been asked to wire a 5000 sq ft garage and showroom. The garage is to be used to dissasemble/restore antique cars. The showroom is for display when they are restored,and viewing by prospective buyers.

This is all under one roof. The showroom has a large rollup door opening into the garage.

Am I correct in calling the garage area a class1 div.1 area? If so,would the showroom be included in the C1 D1 area?

The NEC required calculations and tables for dwellings are generally harder to do and understand, so resisdential electricians should not sell themselves short.

I would not go out of my way to call an area a Class 1 Division 1 area unless it is comletey obvious by use and definition. It is wise to get the AHJ or a local fire inspector to make that decsion for you.

However, Article 511, covers the requirements for the occupancy you describe. Read this section carefully to see what areas will be classified and which areas do not need to be. The showroom area can be made unclassified if certain criteria is met by this section, or it will also have to be classified.

Thanks a lot Bryan. One of the problems with this job is that the jurisdiction its in has no Ahj,electrical permits or inspections.

I'm sort of on my own with the designation, but maybe I can get a fire officials help.

I admire you for the fact that there is nobody 'watching' you and you want to do it right!
Like Bryan has mentioned reading Art 511 is important, just to mention, pay attention to the wiring methods in the garage portion. We all have stretched our business into installations we are not sure about, but I am sure you will do a great job.

If the building does not dispence fuel, then I would probably class this as an S-1 Occupancy through the International Building Code. C1D2 provisions would apply for the area 18" and less above the floor unless mechanical ventilation provisions are provided. The remaining area, including the showroom would no be classed as a hazardous location. Just my opinion on the minimum provisions required.
