is there anything wrong with putting a light switch on its own 15 amp circuit in the same junction as a garbage disposal switch on its own 20 amp dedicated line?

newbie, thanks

Re: garbage disposal switch and light switch

Had an inspector in Gardena Grove, CA tell me that is was not legal (not my normal service area). Didn't believe him but didn't have an nec code book in hand or even know what to quote? Anyway, thanks, do you know what part of the nec applies?

He could even save a circuit and put them on same circuit. We had a thread on that last week.It earned me a dozen eggs on my face.
The post was ( permissable loads)

You're joking right??

It falls into the "not prohibited"
category IMO. It is sort of like 300.3(C)(1) stating conductors of separately derived systems can occupy the same raceway, enclosure or cable. Although we are not talking about sep. derived systems I consider it similar.

This is ok. However if you use a multi-conductor branch circut ,lets say a 12-3 with ground and share a neutral your 2 breakers must have handle ties so they shut off simutaniously.

If i have 12-2 for disposal and want to use it for light, can i use 14-2 to the light or i have to use 12-2 to the light.

Ace a conductor has to be protected at its rated ampacity, except that 240.4 (D) gives us the ampacity for small conductors. I'll ask you:
If the light is wired with 14-2 rated per 240.4(D) what is the ampacity of 12-2 circuit?

Either use 12-2 or change breaker to a 15.
I don't like seeing the breaker changed as someone might later think he can put in a 20
Now if you wanted to exstend a 14-2 circuit with 12-2 i see no problem. And i have done that if i run out of 14-2

I believe code only states that when there is more than 300v potential a seperation must be installed between the devices. This only happens when you have 2 different phases of 277v for commercial lighting installed. 2 circuits in a 2 gang box... one for each switch.

Only if they are on the same yoke.

OK, i will stir the pot this time....Since there will be a 20 amp circuit and a 15 amp circuit in the same box and the grounds have to be connected are the wire nuts or crimps rated for different sized conductors ???? That opens a whole mew window

Should have used spell check mew = new

Allen why not? Don't we have different wire sizes when we connect fixtures. And who doesn't twist the grounds, the greenie is just an added ornament to me

Re: garbage disposal switch and light switch

The installation that has been described is very common and is permitted by the NEC. I would ask for a code citation so as to see where the AHJ is coming from.

210.19(A)(4)exception
This provides for tap conductors for branch circuits, but is very restrictive.

Re: garbage disposal switch and light switch

I've had to nut together #10 12 and 14 sometimes due to derating and voltage drop considerations on the conductors in some boxes.

Ideal has an excellent chart of valid combinations for the allowable combinations on their web site:

http://www.idealindustries.com/pdf/Combinations.pdf

There's many more valid combinations than are listed on the product boxes. When something is outside "normal", this chart is real handy.
