Garbage Disposal Switch

Is there a code restriction on garbage disposal switches as far as location and height? I ran into this today during a final inspection. The electrical contractor mounted the switch inside the cabinet. So to turn the disposal on,you would have to open the cabinet door to turn the switch on.

No.

With Granite backsplashes in alot of high-end custom homes, this is not uncommon.
Plugmold under the cabinets and disposal switch inside cabinet. No holes in backsplash.

Re: Garbage Disposal Switch

Actually i know of no place that even says it must be switched. So location is up to the EC and customer.I don't believe i would want to open a cab.to turn switch on.

Re: Garbage Disposal Switch

430.102 requires the disconnect to be within sight of the motor. So the switch under the cabinet, although not conveniently placed for the user, is more compliant than the switch above the counter.

They also make a "batch feed" disposal with a switching device that is placed in the sink drain hole and turned to activate the pig.

Also I have used air switch controller similar to what is used on a cuzi for powering the pig. Just cut the air button into the sink or counter top.

Re: Garbage Disposal Switch

I prefer installing the disposal switch under the sink. This way the user must open the cabinet to turn the unit on. If the switch is above the cabinet, although not illegal it increases the risk of someone thinking its a lightswitch & turning the unit on accidentally.

Re: Garbage Disposal Switch

I like that idea.

I figured it was more an issue of accidentally being shut off! Do you guys who practice this get callbacks about dead DW's much?
