Garbage disposal

Hello everyone. I do understand that for the new coach cycle in Florida (NEC 2020) that new installs for garbage disposals must be cord and plug connected (have to install a receptacle under the sink).

What is the code for replacing a garbage disposal? Can I hardwire it (simple remove and replace) it was originally, or do I have to upgrade (install receptacle under the sink. Cord and plug connected)?

If its a simple replacement I don't think you have to upgrade IMHO.

If you hired a plumber to change it they would reconnect it as is and they probably get the call more than an electrician would.

Does replacing a garbage disposal require a permit or something? Just replace it. When I replace my disposal, I don't even change the cord because they don't come with one. You're changing out a motor not the branch circuit.

If you change out a device you have to upgrade to afci or whatever the case may be, however it really depends on what your area expects.

I wouldn't call a garbage disposal a device. With a receptacle being replaced, and the area requires AFCI, you just put in an AFCI receptacle. Where a garbage disposal being replaced, I wouldn't think you would be required to run wire (if needed) install a box, etc. just for like for like replacement.
I would liken that to replacing an HVAC unit that was installed before the service receptacle requirement. You wouldn't have to install the service receptacle on just a change out of the HVAC.

I think this is a moot point since I don't know anyone that would call for an inspection for a garbage disposal replacement.

I wouldn't make you upgrade. Some inspectors might. A not insignificant percentage of the inspectors who would make you upgrade would also wish that you had just done whatever you wanted without asking so they didn't have to get involved.

What code section are you referring to? Could you instead just put a locking device on the breaker feeding the disposal to meet the 2020 NEC? They cost only a few dollars and they are as fast as removing and replacing the subpanel cover to install.

I think he is referring to the need for a gfci.

In my area they phased out hardwire long ago and now ISE is changing over to their EZ Connect Cord on the better models so that you will have to buy their cord in the future(?)

Insinkerator brand is the same way. I installed one for a friend the other day. I expected to have to swap the cord until I saw the cord that was bought with it.
