Just posting quick post. I'm pretty sure of the answer but don't have time now to go in detail to look it up. A garbage disposal under a sink has to have GFI protection, right? Sorry for the quick post. Time is a problem right now. :( Thanks

A garbage disposal itself does not require GFCI protection, but if it is cord and plug connected the receptacle that supplies it may need GFCI protection as it is likely within 6' of the edge of the sink.

The 2017 NEC specifies that the 6' distance should be measured without "passing through a door" among other things (210.8, second paragraph). So whether the garbage disposal requires a GFCI depends on whether you read that to include the cabinet door under the sink (assuming there is a cabinet door), or read it to mean only people doors, not cabinet doors.

The 2020 NEC removes the language about doors, so the garbage disposal definitely requires a GFCI.

Cheers, Wayne
