SCENARIO:

I have a client that has an existing brick masonry fireplace that they currently have as a wood burning fireplace. They want to convert it to a gas fireplace with a gas insert fireplace. According to the client, the fireplace guy says all he needs is an outlet and that the unit has a whip on it to plug it in.

QUESTION(S):

1.) Can I install an outlet directly behind the fireplace insert or does it need to be accessible?

2.) Do I need a some sort of disconnecting means like a wall switch since the unit will have a blower? I believe the client says the unit is also controlled by a remote.

In my opinion this is kinda no different than an outlet behind a refrigerator or a range. You’d still have to move the appliance to access the outlet.

Anyways, any input from you guys would be appreciated. Thank you.

1 Yes but check the instructions and see if it's hardwired with a little handy box on the back corner. Also don't put a splice back there not a code reason it's just a bad idea. Plan on a switchloop also in the event that either this unit or a future one will need it.

2. If it's an outlet then the cord is the disconnecting means one isn't needed but put it there anyway.

Get the manual for the insert.
The several inserts I have owned had specific places where the wiring needed to be, often the receptacle was actually mounted internal to the insert. Don't forget wiring for a wall mounted fan speed control and a toggle switch for the gas valve circuit.

Neither is a good idea but does an outlet need to be readily accessible? Then look at definition of accessible.
An outlet does not need to be readily accessible. However, (there's always a however in life), an outlet supplying a dishwasher shall located in the space adjacent to the dishwasher. 2020 NEC 422.16(B)(2)(5).

Need brand/model/install manual to know the requirements.

Some inserts only need constant power. Sometimes that means hardwired, sometimes a receptacle behind.

If it has a remote control, it probably doesn't need a wall switch - but "probably" is not the same thing as 100% certainty. Get the install manual.

And I wouldn't take anyone's word. Last summer I was told a fp needed only constant power, only to learn on the finish that I needed 2 wall switches

"outlet" or receptacle?

A jbox is an outlet. Can't bury a jbox (can we?).

If the recept is behind the unit, how exactly can it be used? You plug in the insert while sliding insert unit into place?

An outlet has to be accessible. A receptacle outlet has to be accessible.
I never said we can bury a jbox. Although, I believe a lot of us have found them on remodels and such.

Can a dishwasher have an outlet or blank cover behind it?
Although the dishwasher is -almost- easily removable, all I have ever seen for plug-in connection is a receptacle box in the adjacent under sink space. This also allows disconnecting the unit to trouble shoot and repair controls, switches, etc. without pulling the unit out of its niche.
Range tops, ovens, and built-in microwaves have all had the receptacle, if any, mounted directly behind the unit in my experience.

In this area, dishwashers have had several methods.

Old days, a cable direct to wiring box. Must be disconnected to pull DW out.

Next, a switchbox with SP switch, lays loose in the back of the space. Cable from box to DW, with enough slack to pull unit out and turn switch off.

Next, a receptacle in adjoining undercabinet space. Put cord & plug on DW and run through to cabinet. Have also seen a switch done this way.

Next & best IMHO, a switch in the wall nearby, cable down to DW, long enough to be worked. Switch should get a half moon shield on it to prevent accidental kills.
