I know this subject has been discussed in depth, but I want to pursue a different angle. [I am familiar with and agree with most members belief there is no such requirement to bond hot-cold-gas at the water heater].
IF we have the older wiring system with no equipment ground and IF we believe the gas pipe is 'likely to become energized'...does a gas-to-water pipe bond satisfy the code requirement to bond the gas pipe? [In my experience I have never seen a gas-to-water pipe connection anywhere except at the water heater]
The Code says [in such a scenario] the gas piping shall be bonded to:
- the service equipment enclosure,
- the grounded conductor at the service,
- the GEC where of sufficient size, or to
- the one more more GEs used.
Bonding the gas pipe to the water piping system at the water heater does not satisfy the code requirement for bonding the gas pipe.
If, as an inspector, we feel there is a real need to bond the gas piping system then the bonding connection can only be made between the gas pipe and one of the locations listed in 250.104(B).
I only bring this up because it has become one of my pet peeves - inspectors insisting on a hot-cold-gas bond connection at water heaters [it's worse when the underground water supply is PVC and no connection to the service has ever been made].
