Gas Station Closed Down

There was an illegal receptacle being fed by wires coming out of a vertical sealing fitting EY (not very sure) like 36" off the floor. But what catch my attention was that this fitting was treaded to the pipe coming from the floor and at the other end going to the ceiling, there were THHN wire (4 of them ) that are the feed for the lights, just on the air no raceway at all. This pipe and fitting are inside a square metal structure (12"X12"X 14 feet or so) My question is if it is possible to use this wire method inside close metal structures.

Re: Gas Station Closed Down

OK so the hollow structural metal post is being used for a raceway? Art 410 defines a lighting pole as a raceway. However if its holding up a canopy then its not a lighting pole.

Re: Gas Station Closed Down

Well these 2 metal structures hold up the ceiling structure and this ceiling has 6 luminaries. I can not see how these thhn wires go from the metal structure to the luminaries. All of these is more than 14' high

Re: Gas Station Closed Down

Tom, I'm not sure what the OP is describing, but I recently wired a new gas station canopy. The support columns were clearly intended by the manufacturer to be used as a raceway, and I think this is typical of most canopies. At the top end of the column there was a threaded hub which I used as a starting point for the conduit run to the luminaires. I agree it is not a lighting pole, but I wonder if this an oversight or if there is another code section that permits this??

John, Is there any info on line where I cpuuld see how this is being use as a raceway? Any Company name, etc Thanks for your help

Re: Gas Station Closed Down

Nieto, I asked for the same information from the vendor, and all I got were spec sheets for the luminaires. I'm not aware of any info available on the web. As I said, the column was clearly intended to be used as a raceway, as there was no way to install a raceway inside it. The feed came up through the ground into an EY fitting inside the column. We pushed our wires down from the top and made the splice thru a hand-hole provided near the EY. At the top it was just another hand-hole on one side, and a 3/4 threaded hub on the other. We used a close nipple and an LB to attach to the threaded hub, which was really just a threaded coupling welded onto the column. It all passed inspection.

I think you were lucky. What part of the country was this job in?

Re: Gas Station Closed Down

This was in central Jersey. I don't think luck had much to do with it though.

Well Inspector was there yesterday, he was happy with everything I did ;) What I found was this EY fittinig was not sealed I don't know how it pass inspection before but I just sealed it and remove and capped the wires in the panel. He didn't say anything about those THNN coming out of the fitting just like that.

If I understood what you said happened, the wires came from the fixtures to the LB at the top of the canopy column, then through the "welded coupling" then down the inside of the pole. You didn't mention any wireway connected to the coupling on the inside of the pole, nor did you say you but any king of bushing on it. I believe letting the wires come out of that coupling with no bushing or wireway is not code compliant. If I understand correctly the way this was wired, I stand by my statement that you were lucky. If I misunderstood then my statement does not apply. Anyway, it' not a big deal, and I'm glad it all passed!
