gas station POS

Some of these gas stations are sitting further and furhter away from actual POS in store. What are some of the ways you guys dealing with VD in data cables? We find everyome using cat5 for runs between 200' to 500'. The wire ends up failing.

Fiber? The media converters are getting cheaper every day..
 
What is the data? Is it ethernet or something like RS485? 100 meter limit for cat5 applies to ethernet, but not if the cat5 is being used as twisted pair for something else such as rs485.

The gas stations I wired had a cat5 cable with ends from the pos to the data distribution box typically in the back room of the store. From that data box the manufacturer typically called for a #18 minimum twisted pair (10-12 tpf) for communications. For long runs they recommended going up to #14.

I would just order 5,000' reels of TFFN #18 twisted pair from the factory. No additional insulation, they just twisted up the wire (and did a fantastic job). I thought it was neat because when this stuff was getting started in the early 80's one pump manufacturer recommended field twisting the wire before installing. Now that was a treat.
 
Avalan, wireless. recommended and sold by at least one major pump manufacturer.

Just came out in the last 2 years. Ive been involved with 30 or so sites. Doing one Tuesday. The Avalan system will run pump and card reader data. The new card systems are all IP and on a network behind a firewall so wireless is perfect for that. Pump data is a little shaky. Won't be long before you pull power and thats it. Wireless will run all comms including relay selects and even Veeder Root sensors in dispenser pan. Pump techs have to be IT guys now.

Are Gilbarco and Wayne both doing it? Verifone POS?

I know TMS in Raleigh was working on a wireless console.
 
Wayne installs them in the pump out of the factory. Gilbarco doesn't but their card readers are on the network also so the pump doesnt know the difference wired or wireless. Works with either. All i see now is verifone pos

Hey wallyworld, you ever wire or work on a Wayne 2400 system (I wired the 1st one ever sold I was told, IIRC 1983). :)

The instructions were just a bunch of printed pages sent loose. No binding at all.

Let me see if I can remember,

Per hose:
Authorize
Call
Return
Neutral
Fast valve
Slow valve
Pul A
Pul B

Light hot
Light neutral

The cable didnt need to gas or vapor tight?? or special requirements.

Many 2400 consoles. That isnt a wiring diagram from the 90s when I installed them. I might be installing one fairly soon actually. Trying to talk a location into one, they want simple, no card readers.

2400 pulse system? I thought they quit making the pulse systems years ago. You know the one that had that 2x2 electronic board for each fueling point (hose not dispenser side). Made to drive the electric reset and mechanical pulser and control the valves.
