How do others handle making a Service Call. Do you allow a certain amount of Mileage , then charge for x amount of miles over. Any thoughts would be great

I never heard of anyone charging mileage for a service call. I have a set fee for a service call but if someone calls me from the middle east I probably will up the ante. Seriously if the call is more than 15miles away I need to charge more. I don't actual charge the mileage I will tell the ho it's 90 or 100 dollars instead of 80.
 
When fuel gets about $2.50 a gallon we start charging a fuel surcharge. It is all based on the miles driven. Sometimes we charge mileage when we are allowed to. A person once told me if you watch the pennies the dollars will take care of themselves.

Why are you calling your customers such names? :D

I generally start the clock 1/2hr before I get there. In other words, the hourly rate covers the first half hour (which reduces the "but you were only here 10 minutes!" complaints), and then hourly after that.

This is effectively the same as billing travel one way at full rate, or charging half-price for travel time round-trip.
 
Recently I needed a block wall built so I got a bid. The estimater said one day job for 4 guys. The bid listed a price plus a note that said there would be a fuel surcharge. I called the owner and asked how much. He said $100.00! One skid-steer one day and the higher price of fuel would add $100.00. This was a short time ago when the prices headed down for a while.
 
So are you saying that the first hour of your service call is time and half, then you drop to straight time. I just have heard some charging a surcharge for fuel if it exceeds the mileage that they have figured into there hourly rate. I mean there could be a chunk of change there if you do not get paid for the fuel. We can not drive places for free.
 
The company I work for charges by the mile on top of the time it takes to get there.

If I do a service call off hours the customer pays round trip miles and time.
