Ge main panel

I just had my main panel replaced and he used a 100 amp GE contractor pack panel from Home Depot. Came with 20 slot box, 100 amp main, 50amp,30 amp,6-20amp,6-15amp breakers. I had someone come to check it out and they said these are junk and I shouldn't have used it. Everything "looks" good and I have no problems but am now wondering if my upgrade was an actual downgrade.

Re: Ge main panel

Nah, GE makes a good product. The contractor packs are just an assembly of all the essential components that are normally purchased separately. As long as the installation is to current code, and all manufacturer's instructions were followed. You will have a completely safe and effective service life.

Re: Ge main panel

GE is not my preferred brand, but plenty of these panels are installed. There's no reason to expect that it will have a shorter or longer lifespan than any other brand. It meets the same UL requirements as any other brand. Some people are stuck on a certain brand or brands, sort of like Fords vs. Chevy vs. Dodge. Some brands are more installer friendly than others, but there are none in current manufacture that I would classify as "junk".

Re: Ge main panel

Actually we prefer GE panels for service upgrades. Most of the older homes around here are wired with armored cable. We prefer the galvanized finish on the GE panelboards because they provide a better grounding connection than the painted panelboards when used with cables that have only a metal jacket as a grounding conductor. Also you can't beat the price.

And their qualification to make this comment is...?

Of the major brands now on the shelves everywhere, I can not think of a panel that doesn't meet or exceed current NEC wire bending requirements or satisifies UL listings. As was already mentioned, some panels are more user friendly than others.

Re: Ge main panel

This is good to hear. I like the box and for $100 it was hard to pass up espically with all the breakers. Thank you.
