Why do many utilities forbid the GEC connection inside of metering enclosures, even though it is often the best and most logical place to make the connection?

Re: GEC connection inside metering eqpt.

Good question Peter? I agree it is the best place to make the connection, it also eliminates the possibility of a parallel path (as far as wire conductors) and would perform its designed task before entering the load end equipment.

I'm lucky that here in the Southeast (at least most of it) it is allowed.

My guess would be they want to keep everybody out of there. It is allowed here. Generally the property owner owns the meter enclosure except for the meter itself. I would guess the utility would have to own the meter enclosure of they wanted to keep you out of it.

Re: GEC connection inside metering eqpt.

POCO here has no problem with it. The first thing you do when you take the meter can out of the box is knock out the hole in the bottom for the No. 6. ;)

Re: GEC connection inside metering eqpt.

As the GEC connection must be accessible our state electrical rules woun't allow a connection in the meter socket, unless the POCO requires it.

Re: GEC connection inside metering eqpt.

We did not permit the connection in the meter fitting until I explained the necessity of permitting it to be made in that location. We now permit that connection and it is considered accessible. It is sealed but someone can get to all of the connections if they need to get there.

Tom, if the connection must be accessible, what about the connections of the phase and neutral connections?

Re: GEC connection inside metering eqpt.

here in VA, or at least the southern side, the POCO will not allow it inside the meter enclosure
