GEC Physical Protection

I need to get a gec from the main panel in a house to the opposite end where the water main enters the structure. One on the basement rooms is finished. Can the gec be run underground just buried in the dirt a few inches? We do this all the time when running to a ground rod but that seems normal. What about to the water pipe?

I don't know of any rule against it.

If there's a concrete slab going on top, you may want to have your AHJ inspect it beforehand.

There is no concrete. Has anybody here ever done this? Seems better than making swiss cheese out of a finished basement room to run the GEC

You can run your GEC in the ground. Whether or not it is subject to physical protection is up to the AHJ to make that interpretation.

If the project is not getting inspected then you can be the AHJ and make that call.
